Grilled Watermelon Wedges
Watermelon is one of those fruits that you only see in the summer. I can buy apples, berries, and grapes all year round, but melons only show up in the summer. When it does, it goes like crazy, especially at the farmer’s market where it’s much better than the grocery store, but for some reason it shows up earlier in the grocery store than the market.
Enough about that. Let’s talk watermelon. It’s sweet, juicy, with a distinct flavor that screams summer, and you’ll often find it at every barbecue or cookout you go to. Usually, though, it’s just some watermelon pieces someone haphazardly cut up because, well, it’s summer in the Midwest, and this is what you do.
It’s good of course. But good isn’t good enough for me when it comes to food. I like effortless foods, but sometimes a tiny bit more effort can yield better results. Like the case of watermelon.
Instead of slicing it and slapping it on a plate, put it on the grill first. You’ve probably already got a grill going, after all. Grilling heats and caramelizes the watermelon, but you can take it one step further than that and brush it with some Ava Jane’s Kitchen extra-virgin avocado oil beforehand. The floral aroma of the oil is a beautiful thing on watermelon. And if you want take it one step even further than that, sprinkle you’re grilled watermelon with some Colima Sea Salt. The crunchy salt brings out the caramelized flavor like nothing else.
So, yes, a series of very small steps can turn something that’s already quite delicious into something nothing short of amazing.
